Sažetak
The aim is to discuss several alternative concepts in contemporary social theory replacing the concept of society as a relatively bounded entity, corresponding to some kind of territory, with its own culture and a set of institutions. In the introductory part, the meanings of "society" are discussed followed by the critique of "methodological nationalism" - the perspective equating the borders of society with national borders within the social theory. Several alternative concepts are critically reviewed including global (civil) society, the notion of mobilities (Urry), transnational social spaces and European society as transnational social space (Rumford). The author concludes that the current crisis of the (national) concept of society can be interpreted as an opportunity for new definitions and possibly more adequate understandings of the ongoing transformations of the social.
