Body and Awareness as Reflected in the Wife of Bath's Tale. A Historical Study
Considering the facts that Geoffrey Chaucer lived in the fourteenth century and in the Canterbury Tales described people of his period, one might think that the topic chosen for the conference is completely out-of-date, but that is not true. We find that the Wife of Bath possessed and expressed feminine awareness, based on her personal experience, more typical of modern women than of mediaeval. In this paper we aim to highlight some of its aspects in order to elicit an answer to the question in what way awareness based on bodily experience has changed over the centuries, or whether it has changed essentially at all.
