Practical Application of Symbiotic Nitrogen Fixation as a Way of Preservation and Protection of Agricultural Soil

Gradual acceptance of multiple cross compliance principles of the EU within Croatian agricultural policy resulted in application of various procedures which protect soil, water and air. Soil preservation within protection of the environment becomes more and more important in the agricultural production. Aiming at protection and soil preservation, a special place is reserved for practical application of natural process of symbiotic nitrogen fixation. Nodular bacteria in the symbiotic relationship provide to legume necessary quantities of atmospheric nitrogen. Therefore, the mentioned process satisfies ecological, economic and energetic aspect. Application of vaccine for pre-seeding bacterization of leguminous seeds respects multiple cross compliance principles. Those procedures protect soil and water from harmful nitrates occurred as a consequence of excessive fertilization by mineral fertilizers. Research on natural populations of nodular bacteria in the soil established their adaptability to unfavorable conditions of the environment. Because of that, importance of research is emphasized as well as further selection of indigenous strains of nodular bacteria of individual legume species in various soils. On the Croatian soils, the study has been performed of nodular bacteria on soya, lucerne, cattle peas and beans. Furthermore, it was established that existence of natural population of nodular bacteria varies at different legume species. So, the study determined very small existence of natural population of nodular bacteria of beans in relation to symbionts of other studied legume. Population study of indigenous strains of nodular bacteria, as a basis for their further selection and practical application in pre-seeding bacterization of legume, makes an important contribution in improvement of legume production and the environment protection.
