Potential of metallurgical waste in methylene blue removal

Dyes represent the class of pollutants that are not easily biodegradable from waters. The presence of even less than 1 ppm for some dyes in water is highly visible and undesirable. Although different treatment options for dye removal from wastewaters exist, the effectiveness of adsorption has made it an ideal alternative to other expensive methods. Activated carbon has been found as the most widely used adsorbent, as it possesses high capacity for the adsorption of organic materials. However, due to the high cost of the activated carbon, the scope of many adsorption studies has been focused on deriving cheaper adsorbents from waste materials. The purpose of this study is to compare the potential of some waste solid materials as adsorbents for methylene blue removal. These include industrial byproducts from metallurgical plants, i.e. carbon anode dust, blast furnace sludge and ladle furnace slag. For the comparison, commercial carbon black and activated carbon are also used for MeB adsorption. The ladle furnace slag has shown the lowest capability for methylene blue removal while the other adsorbent materials used are highly efficient.
