Novel Series of Dicyclopalladated Azobenzenes
Cyclopalladated complexes of azobenzenes have been widely studied primarily because of their application in organic synthesis and in the design of new catalysts, liquid crystalline materials and bioactive compounds. Since dicyclopalladated azobenzenes absorb strongly in the visible region and some of them also show fluorescence in the solution and in the solid state at room temperature they are good candidates for photosensitizers. Furthermore, these compounds contain two easily exchangeable solvent ligands and thus have been used as precursors for preparing a variety of new complexes relevant for sensors and optical devices. Herein, we describe the synthesis, spectroscopic and structural characterization of novel series of dicyclopalladated 4, 4'-disubstituted azobenzenes (Scheme 1). Electrospray mass spectrometry provided a detailed insight into their fragmentation pathways. UV-vis kinetic measurements were used to study the cyclopalladation reactions of the investigated azobenzene ligands in N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF).
