Photochemical formation and reactivity of homoadamantyl : and protoadamantyl-zwitterions
Chemistry of nonspecific carbocations has been extensively investigated in the past decades. Within the scope of that research, a special attention was directed to adamantyl cation and its rearrangement reactions. Recently we reported a mild photochemical approach for the generation of adamantyl cations. Photo-dehydration reaction of phenol 1 delivers zwitterion 2, which rearranges to zwitterion 3 furnishing 2, 4-disubstituted adamantyl derivative 4. Herein we report on photochemical generation of zwitterions in an analogous photoreaction from 4-homoadamantyl- 5 and 4-protoadamantylphenol derivative 6. The cationic species formed in the photo-dehydration reaction were detected by transient spectroscopy. Reactivity of the zwitterionic intermediates was studied by preparative photo-solvolyses and laser flash photolysis.
