The new onset of fever in the intensive care units
New onset of fever in the ICU is defined as an increase of temperature above 38.3 C in previously afebrile, or increase of temperature greater then 1 C in previously febrile patients. In case no cause of such fever is identified within three days from its inition, whith diagnostic procedures conducted, it is considered as a fever of unknown origin. Most common causes are hospital infections (primary sepsis, pneumoniae, urinary tract infections, trombophlebitis, sinusitis) but substantial percentage goes to drug fever, and in patients with central nervois system diseases to fever of central origin. This presentation comes with the procedure and therapy agorythm in such patients.
