Expression profiling and phylogeny of MATE (Multidrug and toxin extrusion) proteins in zebrafish, Danio rerio (Hamilton, 1822)

Absorption, distribution, transformation and elimination present key processes of metabolism of endo- and xenobiotics. The last step of their elimination includes so-called MATE (Multidrug and toxin extrusion) proteins which efflux chemicals from the cell. MATE proteins are found in almost all organisms, ranging from bacteria to humans. Three MATE proteins are found in humans (MATE1, MATE2, MATE2-K), while in most vertebrates two MATEs are found. MATE genes are present ubiquitously throughout body and are mostly expressed in kidneys and liver, the most important detoxification organs. Since current knowledge about MATEs is limited to mammals, the idea behind this study was to explore MATEs in fish using zebrafish (Danio rerio, Hamilton, 1822) as a model species. First comprehensive phylogenetic analysis of MATEs, from bacteria to humans have been conducted and five MATE genes have been identified in zebrafish. Five zebrafish MATEs where further characterized in terms of their mRNA expression across tissues of male and female fish.
