Polymorphisms in the Interleukin-1B And IL-1 Receptor Antagonist Genes in Predisposition to Hip and Knee Osteoarthritis in Croatian Population
Among the predisposing factors to either primary or secondary osteoarthritis (OA) is the complex genetic inheritance including differences in risks at different joints. The interleukin-1B (IL1B) and IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL1RN) genes were implicated in susceptibility to hip, knee and hand OA. Here we investigated genetic polymorphisms at IL1B SNP (1423C>T) and IL1RN VNTR in a case-control study with 497 patients (238 knee and 259 hip) who had undergone total joint replacements, and 505 healthy blood donors in Croatian population. Our results support some of the previous findings reported for the hip OA in European and American populations. The influence of these polymorphisms regarding predisposition to knee OA in Croatian (Caucasian) population will be summarized.
