Extended household communes in Croatia and Albania during 18th and 19th century

This paper analyzes the life in an extended family household as a form of family life in Croatia and Alabnia during the 18th and 19th century. The paper establishes commonalities of two systems which are especially emphasized in the existence of hierachy in the relationships between their members, as well as the specific position of women in the extended family household. Such a family organisation and life style indicate significant similarities in the development of social values and social standards in both nations. However, for the purpose of comparing the authors do not ignore significantly distinct socioeconomic and geopolitical conditions which determined the course of not only the rise but also disappearance of extended families in these areas in various ways. The significance of the historic diversity is also pointed out, which, while it had impacted the reality of life of both the Albanian and Croatian peoples, had not ultimately changed the basic features of life in extended families in a significant way. The authors emphasize that differences arose and have been reflected in the daily life only since the second half of the 19th century following the appearance of new market interests. There are two basic facts arising from new market relations: greater adjustment of the family, and discontent within the extended families resulting in the extended families falling apart. In Croatia the process happened quickly, simultaneously changing moral comprehensions and understanding of life values which can be said to have acted as a link between the two nations up to that point.
