Nature of friction between geogrids and soil
Numerous test results suggest that pullout force is dramatically different for geotextile and geogrids due to presence of grid transversal ribs which create passive resistance during pullout through the soil. In this article pullout tests performed on different grids on non-cohesive soils are analyzed, illustrating influence of geometry of grids, grain size and mechanical properties of grids on pullout resistance and role of friction and bearing capacity of transversal ribs. It is shown that for small grain size soils the same friction formula for grids and geotextiles can be used, but with increase of soil grain size, grid stifness and with proper relation of grid opening geometry and grain size of soil, overall resistance is much higher and friction is related to sliding among particles, while slip surface is above plain of geogrid.
