Space, Conceptualization and Case Meaning: A Cognitive Account of the Dative in Croatian
Setting off from the thesis that morphologically marked cases in flective languages do not represent semantically empty categories, but have inherent meanings of schematic nature, this paper studies semantics of dative in Croatian language by analysing different types of sentence constructions: transitive and intransitive, transfer and nontransfer. The emphasis is put on semantic features which dative complemets in different types of constructions have in common. The main goal of such procedure is to establish an integral superschema which covers different dative meanings and which, as it will be shown, is based on conceptualization of spatial relations. Authors state that different meanings of dative complements, regardless of specific semantic features of dative referents, have common foundations in spatial relations i.e. in concrete and simple concepts of proximity and direction as unavoidable parts of every day human experience
