Evaluation of the Nihon Kohden MEK-8118K automated blood counter
The Nihon Kohden MEK-8118K automated blood counter was evaluated in regard with within-run and between-run precision, carryover and accuracy. Sensitivity and specificity of the instrument were determined by comparing the manual and instrument differentiation. Within-run and between-run precision showed satisfactory results for all parameters determined. Accuracy of the measurement tested by comparison of the results simultaneously obtained on the MINOS STE (Cobas, Roche) and MEK-8118K (Nihon Kohden) analyzers showed satisfactory correlation coefficients for nearly all parameters (WBC r=0.99, RBC r=0.91, HGB r=0.99, HCT r=0.97, MCV r=0.94, MCH r=0.92, PLT r=0.98), except for MCHC (r=0.15). The three-part differential blood count produced by the MEK-8118K was compared to the reference manual method, satisfactory correlation were obtained for granulocytes (r=0.94) and lymphocytes (r=0.92), whereas for mononuclears it was lower (r=0.59) indicating sensitivity of 91% and specificity of 92% of the MEK-8118K. Results of the evaluation showed the MEK-8118K hematology analyser to be a precise, accurate and reliable instrument in blood count determination and in signalising changes in differential blood count. In such cases, however, the blood sample should also be microscopically examined to verify the possible changes in the distribution and/or morphology of particular types of leukocytes.
