WHERE DOES THA WILD BOAR GO’S: A MICROSATELLITE APPROACH
Wild boar (Sus scrofa, L.) is a native game animal with the highest population density of all wild ungulates in Croatia. Over the past decades the population went through a true biological expansion following European trends. We investigated the population genetic structure and the patterns of gene flow between geographically distinct regions. We sampled wild boars from seven different localities and genotyped them for 14 microsatellite loci (S0002, S0005, S0026, S0090, S0097, S0155, S0226, SW122, SW240, SW632, SW857, SW911, SW936 and SW951). According to the Bayesian methods implemented in STRUCTURE program, cluster result K=9 indicated that wild boars from Cres and Mljet islands were not introduced from the other populations involved in the analysis. We demonstrated a one-way migration of wild boars from the island of Cres, to the Istrian peninsula. The population from the islands of Mljet and Hvar are mainly composed from individuals which naturally immigrated to the islands in 1983 after a large fire on the Pelješac peninsula. However, on Hvar island we identified individuals (24.3 %) that were illegally translocated from the continental regions of Croatia (Lika and Banija). Overall, we demonstrated methodology that based on microsatellite analysis provides for the maintenance of wild boar management programs in Croatia, including the identification of illegally translocated individuals.
