Respiratory allergy in atopic dermatitis
Objective. In a prospective study, the occurence of respiratory allergy was studied in established cases of atopic dermatitis (AD;n=100), and compared with patients with chronic urticaria (n=50) and healthy controls (n=50). Methods. Complete anamnestic data (allergic/rhinitis/conjunctivitis (AR), allergic bronchitis/asthma) were obtained from all examinees. Skin reactivity was evaluated by intradermal and prick testing to standard series of inhalant and nutritive allergens. We also determined the values of total IgE by RIST and ELISA methods, and blood eosinofilic count. Results. In adults respiratory atopy was found in 27/80 (33.7%) of AD patients (allergic rhinitis/conjunctivitis in 18/80 (22.5%), allergic bronchitis/asthma in 6/80 /7.5%) and both in combination in 3/80 (3.7%)). Out of 20 AD children, 15 (75%suffered from a "mixed" type with concomitant respiratory allergies (RA). Conclusion. One fourth to one third of patients with AD had respiratory symptoms as well as skin manifestations of allergy (in adults in 27/80 (33.7%) and in children in 5/20(25%)).
