Preliminary growth and mortality studies of variegated scallop (Chlamys varia Linnaeus, 1758) in Mali Ston Bay (Adriatic Sea)
Chlamys varia, pectinid lamellibranch, is widely distributed along the Atlantic coast of France, it is less abundant in the English Channel, and is known from a few points of the Mediterranean Sea (Letaconnoux & Audouin, 1956). The variegated scallop Chlamis varia (Linnaeus, 1758) is distributed along Croatian coastline of the Adriatic Sea (Marguš et al. 2005). It is usually found in sheltered area. The most common size range is from 35 to 45 mm shell length ; however, individuals of up 65 mm have been reported (Lucas 1965). Although these scallop population are of economic importance, information concerning growth data will be important in the future aquaculture diversification. C. varia contributes little to European fisheries, except in some part of France. Despite this, there has been much research on some aspects of its biology. The most detailed studies have been carried out on a population of C. varia of Lavéneoc, Bay of Brest, France (Shafee 1979, 1980a, b, 1981, 1982 ; Shafee and Lucas 1980, 1982), covering metabolism, growth and reproduction. Growth and reproduction has also been studied for populations on the west coast of Ireland (Rodhouse and Burnell 1979, Burnell 1983, Burnell 1991, Burnell 1995).
