Furniture and health
This paper presents and discusses possible influences of furniture on health and environment, that might occur during production, usage and disposal of wood-made furniture. Results of the study of radioactivity originating from deposited artificial radionuclide 137^Cs in three types of wood - beech, oak and fir as well as in chipboard are presented in detail. The measured radioactivity equals 2.7 Bq/kg for beech, 1.6 Bq/kg for oak, 1.8 Bq/kg for fir and 8.8 Bq/kg for chipboard. From the radioactivity data an annual equivalent dose of radiation for hypothetical furniture made of such radioactive wood, for a ten-hour daily stay in the house, has been calculated, and equals 0.318 mSv. Neither the studied properties of the wood nor the calculated values of each derived number point to any damaging influence of furniture on health.
