Energetic potential of forest biomass in Croatia

Biomass is the oldest energy source for mankind. It encompasses numerous products of different origin (animals, plants). Biomass, as well as its products (fluid biofuels and biogas) is not only potentially renewable, but also similar enough to fossil fuels that their direct replacement could be possible. Biomass combustion provides heat energy for industry and family homes, with simultaneous possibility of electric energy production. Advantages of biomass in comparison to fossil fuels are numerous (renewability, sustainability, low atmospheric pollution-CO2, sulphur, heavy metals, lower production of waste waters, etc). Those characteristics, together with significant biomass production potential, highlight biomass among other renewable energy sources as the most promising for future contribution to the mankind. Biomass can be divided on energetic plants and their remains or waste. Energetic plants can be fast-growing, perennial grasses or algas, while remains include agricultural, forest and industrial waste. Real potential and significance of forest sector in renewable energy production is estimated to be highly significant in comparison to other industrial sectors. Nevertheless, in spite of significant production potential, forest biomass provides only small share of energy needs for Croatia, which makes significant part of natural wealth unused. Biomass production potential, in the scope of forestry sector, relates not only to current wood volume in Croatian forests but also to the available forest and non forest areas which are suitable for forest culture establishment. In this paper wood production in the existing forests is presented together with the potential areas for the forest culture establishment. Special overview is given on further research and categorization of available forest areas together with abandoned agricultural land in relation to bioclimates in which those areas are placed. Gather data are significant for more reliable estimation of real forest and forest cultures potential for the whole Croatia. This would provide basis for getting more accurate picture of wood biomass production significance not only in the frame of biomass production as renewable energy source, but also in the frame of numerous function which forests and forest cultures provide for human society. Biomass products used for heating systems encompass different products made as a result of different wood or woody remains processing techniques (briquettes, pellets and chips). This paper also presents an overview of different products which could be produced from forest biomass.
