Quality of business information and decision in Hotel Management
Information is an indispensable resource of a process of decision-making, and adequate and timely information are an assumption of a rational process of decision-making. Taken ideally, the decision maker needs only relevant information, while lacking or even excessive information hurt them. Besides that, he needs to get them in the period of time which doesn´t jeopardize timely decision-making, and with the acceptable price. It is possible to say that the minimum task of an information-system in the process of decision-making is to provide adequate, timely and economic information, and to create assumptions for bringing the best possible decisions. In this type of work managers use competence, capability, specialist knowledge, experience and judgment, from which results that managing is a complex activity with the elements of skill and science. All this leads to the conclusion that today rational and efficient decision-making without the support of computer information-systems is almost unthinkable, by which the role of computer information-systems is expressed more on the lower levels of management, and it reduces towards the top of management pyramid. Throughout the whole process it can be determined that the input is an information based on which a business decision needs to be brought, and it is permeated with two basic problems: 1.) the way of getting the information and 2.) how to conclude which information is correct and valuable for decision-making. Today’s tourist market, which is by its nature very changeable, brings the question what will happen to it tomorrow, what will happen to the competition on that market, and how will a particular hotel plan its development. Or, terminologically, it can be cleared in the following way: what happened today is news, and what will happen tomorrow is gathering business information. Thanks to the more intensive development of information technology, today management is over excessed with information, and speaking in terms of a new paradigm, this is an anomaly which shows that more and more powerful technology of informing by itself is not a warrantee for being better informed. However, excellent informing of employees is necessary for successful conducting of that process, in order to avoid all the misunderstandings and types of answer “I don´t know”. Design of the information is one of the key factors which opens a road towards changes in business decision-making, and this is exactly what the management needs in order to found a new view on the unit of business in a hotel.
