Activities of serum esterases in patients with hyperlipidaemia

The esterase activities were measured in sera of 141 patient s with hyperlipidaemia and in 27 sera of patients with hyperlipidaemia and diabetes mellitus. The control group consisted of 322 sera of healthy persons. The enzyme activities were measured against substrates paraoxon, phenylacetate and beta-naphtylacetate, and in the presence and absence of EDTA as inhibitor. Activity ranges for a given enzyme and substrate grossly overlapped between all the studied groups. However, medians of the EDTA inhibited and EDTA-uninhibited paraoxonase activities from the control group were significantly higher, as well as activities against phenylacetate (EDTA-inhibited and EDTA-uninhibited) than found for the two groups of patients. HDL-cholesterol, total cholesterol, triglycerides and lipidograms were determined in sera of patients. Serum samples with type V lipidogram had the lowest activities against paraoxon (EDTA-inhibited and EDTA-uninhibited), the lowest HDL-cholesterol and the highest tryglyceride concentrations.
