Integration of renewable energy into urban water system
This paper analyses the integration of renewable energy sources (RES) with urban water system (UWS). RES are traditionally used for water pumping using PV generators, so there is no reason not to use them for pumping water into the UWS. The biggest technological challenge associated with the use of solar and other intermittent RES is the realization of economically and environmentally friendly electric energy storage (EES). The paper elaborates the use of water storages in UWS as EES. Not only can the UWS facilities be used as EES, but with appropriate modifications, the UWS allows the production of renewable energy with the so-called system of green pump forward storage. The integration is possible and desirable for achievement of sustainable objectives of urban areas.
