BMP-6 increases bone mineral density and reduces glycemia in osteopenic mice
Despite the variety of drugs for treating osteoporosis and diabetes, there is a great need for developing new anabolic therapy for patients with severe bone loss and diabetic drugs with a prolonged therapeutic interval. BMP-6 knock-out (Bmp-6 -/-) mice have reduced trabecular bone volume of the peripheral skeleton, under developed pancreas and a reduction in the size of stomach and spleen, causing fusion of the liver and duodenum. Immunohistochemically we found a reduced number of Langerhans islands in the pancreas of Bmp-6 -/- mice which resulted in increased levels of the blood glucose. We suggest that BMP-6 has a strong anabolic effect on bone and, via an insulin independent pathway, reduces glycemia in rodent models of diabetes and bone loss.
