Occlusal control of implant supported prothesis with T-scan - III system

Background: The occlusal forces applied to an implant sup- ported prosthesis can be a potentially destructed factor in shortening the functional durability of this reconstructions. Aim: The aim of this study was to compare the occlusal load of natural tooth on one side, and implant supported crowns and bridges on the other side of the jaw. Methods: Thirty patients (9 men and 21 women), aged from 23 to 74, were tested with T- Scan III system. All of them have at least one implant supported metalceramic crown or bridge. Results: The results showed differences, but not statistically significant, among loading of natural tooth and implant sup- ported restorations. The reconstructions in molar region were loaded with approximately 8% of maximum masticatory forces and natural teeth with approximattely 11%. In premolar region the ratio was 18% of maximum masticatory force on implant supported restorations to 19.5% on natural teeth. In some cases implants were loaded higher than natural tooth. Four patients didn’ t have any occlusal contacts on treated side. The teeth have been loaded at 0.135–1 s. Conclusions and clinical implications: It could be concluded that the final amount of relative force on the implants were not reduced as it was expected, and the implant suported res- torations are loaded with the same amount of force as the nat- ural teeth.
