Croatian Urban Life and Political Sociability in Istria from the 19th to the early 20th century.
The author discusse the question of social and national identities in the urban areas of Istria along the modernization process which took place in the Upper adriatic from the middle of the 19th century on. The author argues with the static idea of late Habsburg Istrian society, and of a rigid distinction between Italian speaking urban population and Slavic peasant population. As in countrysides as in towns, the linguistic, national and social identities were interminlged with political action and with cultural mobilization by both a Croatian and an Italian elite. The small cities of Istria were the battlefield of a competition between nationally oriented political parties but also between cultural associations which were trying to orient the identity of the local inhabitants, in some cases bilingual or trilingual.
