Particularly distinguished within the history of church music in Bosnia and Herzegovina is the name of Mato Banjalučanin, a seventeenth-century Franciscan musician to whom, in 1912, Julijan Jelenić was the first to draw attention by discovering him as the author of Regulae cant.[us] plani pro incipientibus, a music manual to the music history archives of Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, since Jelenić's discovery til today, dilemmas on how to correctly read the author's surname have remained unclarified (the author's full name is written on the front page of the manual). The deciphering of his surname is additionally aggravated by the fact that this manual is a document with a name written on it, due to which a comparation that would greatly help in shedding light on the case cannot be accomplished. The ambiguities regarding Mato Banjalučanin's surname have generated various interpretations of the same as a graphological problem, while this work will attempt to contribute to its clarification. Insight was performed in the Trnava Regional Archive in Slovakia, where the archival material of Franciscan monasteries located in the Trnava region and Franciscan documents from the town of Horne Orešany are located.
