The Representation of Women in Jane Austen's Novels Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park and Northanger Abbey
This paper deals with the representation of women in Jane Austen's novels Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park and Northanger Abbey in relation to moral codes, codes of social behaviour and stereotypes in Victorian society. The portrayal of the heroines of these novels is discussed in relation to some important issues in Victorian society: money, class, property, education, morality, marriage as commodity, etc. The paper attempts to illustrate some conflicting ideals of women and their represenatation in these Austen’s novels.
