Passive behaviour of Al-Mg-Si alloy under the influence of chloride ions
The passive behavior of Al-Mg-Si alloy was studied in NaCl solutions of different concentrations using potentiodinamic polarization measurements. Nonwelded and welded specimens were tested at room temperature in 3- electrode electrochemical system under deaerated conditions. The results have shown that increasing the sodium chloride concentrations shifted pitting potential Eb to more negative potentials. Current increased suddenly and markedly at Eb, denoting the destruction of the passivating oxide film and the initiation of visible pits. SEM/EDS revealed that welded specimen is more prone to chloride attack, which is in terms of microstructural characteristics discussed.
