Principles of Corneotherapy
Corneotherapy consists of daily applications of moisturizing agents to increase skin surface hydration as well as to repair the stratum corneum (SC) barrier dysfunction associated with xerosis and dry skin. Diseased skin requires daily skin care. However, excessive SC hydration induced by occlusion leads to a several-fold to more than tenfold increase in percutaneous absorption of topical drugs applied. Normal SC binds water to keep the skin surface smooth and soft. Pathologic SC with a deficient water-binding capacity produces scaly or cracked skin surface. That is why twice daily application of appropriate moisturizing agents or emollients for 6 weeks, i.e. corneotherapy is needed for therapeutic efficacy. Before applying an easy to handle device, quick analysis of the skin by moisture and sebum measurement are performed using a skin diagnostic device.
