Cytomorphologic changes and antithyroglobulin antibodies in Hashimotos thyroiditis.
Seventy patients with cytologic diagnosis of Hashimoto's thyroiditis and antithyroid antibody results were reviewed. Antithyroglobulin antibodies (TGA) were found in 35 (50%), and antimicrosomal antibodies (MA) in 60 (85.7%) patients. None of the patients had negative MA results and positive TGA results. There were no differences in cytomorphologic changes between TGA-positive and TGA-negative patients. The data obtained suggested that TGA determination did not contribute to the diagnosis of Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Thus, fine-needle aspiration biopsy remains a useful tool in making the diagnosis in patients with strong clinical suspicion of Hashimoto's thyroiditis and negative MA results.
