The Role of Self-Observation in Pre-Service Teacher Education
This study aims to gain an insight into the role of self- observation in pre-service teacher education. The participants in this study are 33 student teachers of English at one Croatian university. The instruments used in the study are self- observation sheets and a questionnaire. During their school-based teaching practice the student teachers filled in self-observation sheets. The sheets consisted of five key questions. Each student filled in three self-observation sheets. On the basis of the qualitative analysis of the student teachers' answers in the self-observation sheets a questionnaire was developed. The questionnaire was accompanied by a 5-point Likert scale. The aim of the questionnaire was to discover the student teachers' attitudes and beliefs about the role of self- observation in pre-service teacher education. The discussion is based on the findings of the qualitative analysis of the self-observation sheets and the quantitative analysis of the results of the questionnaire. The implications of this study for the organization of pre-service language teacher education programmes are pointed out in the conclusive part of the paper.
