Revisiting intercultural competence: understanding students’ conceptualizations and needs
Departing from the results of a survey carried out among university students in four different countries (Croatia, Italy, Bosnia-Herzegovina, U.K.), in this paper the authors revisit the notion of intercultural competence. We explore the perceptions of the notion of intercultural competence among Croatian, Italian, Bosnian-Herzegovian and Chinese students and contrastively show how the notion is conceptualized by the students. We furthermore explore what in their opinion underlies and contributes to the development of intercultural competence. We believe that such an insight is important for the treatment of intercultural competence at both the theoretical level (exploring and developing the issue at the descriptive and analytical levels), and the practical level (teaching / developing intercultural competence).
