Overweight - early stage of adipokine changes in males: leptin and adiponectin relation to anthropometric parameters

Obesity has already been linked to significant metabolic abnormalities, atherosclerotic processes, hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. The classical perception of adipose tissue as a storage place for fatty acids has changed over the last years and has been replaced by the notion that adipose tissue produces large number of adipokines (leptin and adiponectin). Effect of excess adiposity varies from individual to individual. Most studies were done in obese patients, with body mass index over 30 kg/m2. It is still unclear why some groups have greater risk for adipokine – related complications and when that process begins. The aim of this research is to determine the impact of overweight on concentrations of leptin and adiponectin as well as on anthropometric parameters of our subjects. The study included 20 hypertensive, male subjects with body mass index 25–30 kg/m2, with normal glycemia and renal function. Leptin concentration was determined by radioimmunoassay, while adiponectin concentration was determined by enzyme immunoassay. Both leptin and adiponectin concentrations significantly correlated with waist circumference, body mass index and hip circumference in male subjects. Results showed that both leptin and adiponectin concentrations are changed in overweight male subjects. It can be concluded that overweight condition is marked by pathologically altered values of leptin and adiponectin levels with significant relation to anthropometric parameters, and may represent early stage of adipokine – related diseases.
