High Altitude Wind Energy - HAWE Deliverable 10.3: Materials Selection and Aerodynamic Studies Report

Materials selection & Aerodynamics studies report: The work to be done in the present task is focused on finding an appropriate material / materials combination for balloons’ membranes. The membranes need to be strong, tough, UV resistant, buoyancy gas tight and extremely light. Their material(s) must be cheap to produce and, most importantly, be possible to bond either by thermal, ultrasonic, high frequency or other welding process, or through the use of an adhesive or glue. Their mechanical properties must be proofed in high detail especially tear strength and possible material combinations have to be evaluated. Regarding the Aerodynamic simulations, the study will focus on the identification of the main problems associated with the dynamic response of the airborne module under different operating conditions such as different wind speeds, directions and rotation speeds. The analysis of the influence of the cylinder geometry and surface roughness on the lift/drag ratio, which has a direct impact on the power production phase efficiency, will also be analysed. CFD analysis of an airborne multiple module stack, with the testing of several configurations for choosing the best possible solution for stack design is also to be performed. Finally, also to be carried out is the validation and calibration of the CFD model through studies using scale models of design concepts, namely in wind tunnels or instrumented field tests, and the evaluation of the lift and drag coefficients as a function of the rigidity and robustness of the materials employed.
