The role of MATH-BTB protein in asymmetric cell division during megagametogenesis in maize
The development of both female and male gametophyte in plants is characterized by strictly regulated divisions leading to daughter cells of different identities. In spite of our knowledge about the gametophyte morphology and development, little is known about genes involved in these processes. Gene encoding protein containing MATH and BTB domains was highly represented in cDNA library of maize egg cells and was found to be present in zygote as well. A functional analysis was made in order to elucidate the role of MATH-BTB protein and understand how it controls the gametophyte development.
