National Radwaste Management Infrastructure
Croatia, as co-owner of the Krško Nuclear Power Plant, is actively participating in the search fof a safe and environmentally acceptable means for final disposal of low and intermediate level radioactive waste produced in the power plant and the waste expected to be generated during the power plant decommissioning. As the national programme started in Croatia in 1998, the country now faces the most sensitive stage- the naming of a few candidate (preferred) repository sites. Two basic options for shallow land disposal of such wastes are being considered: disposal in horizontal tunnels and near surface burial in special facilities. Because of the importance of a positive public attitude with respect to the project, work is being carried out to develop and maintain honest, open and complete communications with the public, giving them timely information concerning each step in the project.
