Renewable Energy Sources and Their Role in the Sustainable Development of the Adriatic Littoral Area

The new approach to the Croatian energy sector planning is founded on the counties as basic social units. The Adriatic littoral area has its specific energy needs and its development is based on the economic branches of tourism and agriculture, vitally dependent on clean environment. This work presents the new approach to the definition of the role of renewable sources in the sustainable development of the Adriatic littoral area. The place and the role of energy efficiency and renewable energy sources are considered within the energy supply of the Split-Dalmatia County as well as their influence on sustainable development. Presented are energy potentials of small hydropower plants, solar energy, wind energy and bioenergy, energy efficiency and cogeneration, including energy efficiency in building construction. Fields of application, economic evaluation, and necessary measures and organisation of program implementation are described. The model presented can be applied to all coastal counties, and with minor alternations to all other counties.
