Usability Considerations for an Intelligent Tutoring System
Intelligent tutoring systems (ITS) are a new generation of CAI systems intended to support learning and teaching in an arbitrary domain knowledge by taking into consideration both teachers' and students' individuality. One of the key features ITSs should possess, like all modern interactive systems, is a high degree of usability. Usability is a measure of ease with which a system can be learned or used, of its safety, effectiveness and efficiency, and the attitude of the users towards it. A major reason for poor usability of ITS user interfaces is the lack of understanding of the process by which a usable interaction between users (students and teachers) and machines is developed. In this paper we consider usability attributes in the interaction between students and the hypermedia intelligent authoring shell TutorExpert System (TEx-Sys).
