POTENTIAL ORGAN DONOR TRANSPORT – OUR EXPERIENCE.
Organ donation program in our institution started in 1996. At first brain death was diagnosed by clinical tests and cerebral panangiography. In the year 2010 angiography program was closed and we lost possibility for paraclinical brain death proof in our institution. That left us two options. In the beginning we were escorting severely brain-damaged patients and potential organ donors to secondary institutions, 200 km away, where brain death could be proven and explantation performed. That lead to reduction in number of organ donors in the year 2010. so we changed our strategy. In the year 2011 and first 5 months of the 2012 we transported such patients in the institution 100 km away from ours for cerebral scintigraphy as paraclinical brain death test. There were 11 such patients who needed an experienced anesthesiologist and technician in a mobile ICU (equipped with mobile respirator, multiple invasive pressures monitoring, heating device, aspirator, continuous infusion pumps, etc.). Each of the transports lasted around 3 hours. During those transports no serious incidents were noted. Lack of brain circulation was proven in 10 patients and 6 explantations took place in our institution. Conclusion: transport of the potential donor is a safe procedure when performed by experienced stuff and in an equipped ambulance.
