HISTOLOGICAL AND CYTOLOGICAL EXAMINATION OF RAT’ REPRODUCTIVE TISSUE AFTER SHORT-TIME INTERMITTENT RADIOFREQUENCY EXPOSURE

The aim of experiment was to investigate the influence of radiofrequency radiation (RF) on the male rats’ testes histology and epidymal free sperm cell population. Eighteen adult male rats, (12 week-old, approximate body (weigh 350g)were divided into the two groups of nine animals. 915 MHz-radiofrequency field, power density of 2.4 W/m2 and strength of 30 V/m was generated inside the Gigahertz Transversal Electromagnetic chamber(GTEM cell). One group (n=9) was whole-body irradiated in the GTEM chamber for an hour daily during two weeks. Specific absorption rate (SAR) was calculated to be 0.6 W/kg. Sham-exposed control group of animals was included (n=9). Body weight and temperature were measured before and after each exposure treatment. Immediately after last exposure the animals were sacrificed and the testes were removed, cleaned of accessory tissue and fixed. The tissue samples were embedded in paraffin and cross-sections were stained with hematoxylin-eosin stain. Histological sections were evaluated by means of a light microscope. Cauda epididymis was flushed with warm nutrition medium. The free sperm cells were collected and their quantity, quality and morphology were microscopically determined by using a hemocytometer. No statically significant alteration in any endpoints was observed. This study found no evidence of unfavourable effect of applied 915 MHz- radiofrequency radiation on testicular function or structure.
