Implications of temperature change on spring arrival dates of chiffchaff (Pylloscopus collibyta Vieillot) in a site in Croatia
Recent changes in climate have impacted plant and animal ecology worldwide. Weather may affect the timing of arrival in many bird species. I examined changes in the arrival date of the chiffchaff Phylloscopus collibyta in a site in Croatia during the period 1982–2010 and researched possible relationship with local spring temperatures. The chiffchaff is a small, socially monogamous, insectivorous passerine migrant bird species. In the study period mean of all recorded first arrival dates (spring migration) of the chiffchaff was 18 March and modal value was 19 March. Date of arrival was significantly correlated with research period (1982–2010) and with mean air February–March temperature. Mean date of arrival advanced by 7.83 days during the three decades. I suggest that changes in arrival dates varied regarding local mean air temperatures (February–March).
