GIS-based Determination of Optimal Accommodation of Embedded Generation on the MV Network
Modern planning of power distribution systems covers geographical, technical, and economic analysis of different solutions aimed at providing reliable and economically affordable services to the network users. Significant changes have been introduced in the distribution system over the last decade, which also affected distribution networks primarily due to replacing their passive role by an active one. The main reason for that is embedded generation of electricity, which requires more capital investment in the network infrastructure. The planners’ task in such circumstances is to determine not only an optimal but also a robust development strategy for the distribution network reconfiguration and expansion. The goal is to develop a long-term planning model that would minimize possible future mistakes. Geographical Information System (GIS) becomes an indispensable tool for modern planning of power distribution networks. GIS serves as a tool for processing, integration and analysis of data and for providing spatial information and attributes about the distribution network. This paper discusses the use of GIS as a tool for determining optimal locations for embedded generation units (EG Units) in the distribution system pursuant to the European standard EN 50160.
