Education in Fisheries Issues in the Mediterranean and in Croatia

Mediterranean countries pay special attention to the growth of the fisheries and aquaculture sectors and the sustainability of quality fish supply. While capture fisheries have been stagnating, with conventional species being fully exploited or overexploited, the production of cultured fisheries has been expanding. The fishery sector also suffers from the lack of a closer relationship with public research bodies and the fishing industry. Most of the development and testing of the new rearing equipment and fishing techniques are carried out and financed by the fisheries industry itself, with little or no help from academic communities. In certain developed countries, local and central governments invest in promoting better, cleaner and more efficient methods of aquaculture production. Very frequently, the fishing industry, either on its own or in collaboration with the fisheries administration, tests new fishing methods and offshore technology in a high waves environment, conducts market research or experiments with other species to diversify aquaculture production.
