Fungi associated with crown dieback of holm oak (Quercus ilex L.) in Croatia
Occurring practically on the whole coastline area, holm oak (Quercus ilex L.) is one of the most important tree species in the Mediterranean forest vegetation in Croatia. Its ecological, social and economic importance is unquestionable. Symptoms of twigs and branches dieback were obtained in various parts of oak crowns in the research from 2007 till 2012. Results of the laboratory analyses had shown frequent occurrence of species Dothiorella iberica A.J.L. Phillips, J. Luque & A. Alvesand, and Coryneum depressum Schmidt, in the bark of shoots and branches of holm oak along the coast. Presence of these fungi on the young and healthy shoots and branches revealed their significance in observed holm oak dieback.
