EUFEPS Science Policy and EUFEPS Position Paper on Horizon 2020
The European Federation for Pharmaceutical Sciences (EUFEPS, http://www.eufeps.org/) is the only pan-European body to represent the interests of scientists in industry, academia, government and other institutions engaged in drug research, development, regulation and policymaking through Europe. EUFEPS exists to help to meet the challenges and seize the opportunities created by the consolidations occurring both within Europe and globally, driven on by a combination of rapid advances in science and technology, economic pressures, and by political will. In this regard, a two important EUFEPS position papers are: 'EUFEPS Position Paper on Horizon 2020' which was approved by EUFEPS Executive Committee as of June 25, 2012, and 'Draft Position Paper: Draft Proposal for EU Funding of Research & Training in Strategic Areas of Quality by Design (QbD) and Process Analytical Technology (PAT)' (February, 2012). The Horizon 2020 is a more integrated approach to European science policy than expressed in the proposals previously drafted, and specifically considers: (i) promoting excellence in Science, (ii) establishing a sound industrial leadership and (iii) expressing an ambition to address current and future societal challenges. Horizon 2020 also provides the possibility of adopting a more flexible and simplified management route to drive European research through innovation, research and development. EUFEPS perceives “Horizon 2020” as an opportunity for the European Union to promote actions towards a science-based R&D agenda that will enable safer translation to clinical practice of better medicines using streamlined and better methodologies, facing the need to answer unmet population and clinical needs. In the current moment it is also an opportunity for Europe to firmly promote a knowledge-based economy capable of supporting new industrial policies as the basis for active employment policies, at the same time delivering the instruments for better healthcare.
