The concept for assessment of pilot mental readiness training
Demanding pilot missions in highly stressful operational environment and under the intense psychological pressure are main reason for increase of flight accidents due to human’s errors. Therefore, development of appropriate virtual reality (VR) environments for pilot’s mental readiness training, i.e. more rational and effective pilot thinking and acting in uncertain and dynamically changing flight conditions, is extremely important. Mental readiness training is the key for pilots’ effective operational situational awareness and right actions when many uncertainties, threats and obstacles can prevent them in execution of their tasks and missions. Evaluation of pilot cognitive-emotional interactions in stressful mission environment, presented in this paper, is based on real-time estimation of pilot emotions and his cognitive appraisal during flight time. Better understanding of these complex cognitive-emotional interactions in pilot brain, i.e. between the amygdala, the prefrontal cortex (PFC), and related brain structures, as well as understanding their functional interactions, is almost impossible without deeper understanding of their background in the state-of-the-art research in neuroscience. Real-time multimodal estimation of pilot’s mental readiness is based on real-time fusion of pilot’s physiological, vocal, facial and electroencephalogram (EEG) dominant features, as well as on a fusion of a variety of cognitive appraisal features during the mental readiness training on full-flight Mi-17 helicopter simulator. Comparative analysis of pilots’ mental readiness in changing training scenarios and training conditions is based on their multimodal emotional state measurements as subjective task assessment, versus computation of their expected cognitive appraisals based on the state of the environment and helicopter, as objective task assessment. Interdisciplinary research applied in this project is based on the state-of-the-art methods from machine learning, artificial intelligence, data mining, etc. So far, from limited experimental work it is evident that the level of pilots training arousal correlates with objective flight task assessment.
