Formation of carbonates trough the biomineralization processes: nano-scale aggregation route
Biomineralization processes offer a wide variety of biomineral structures of unique morphological and surface properties. It is well accepted that different organics, mostly peptides, proteins and polysaccharides play a significant role in initial crystallization and growth of carbonate solids. Several studies have shown that even the small differences in their amino acid sequence can govern the formation of different calcium carbonate polymorphs with unusual hierarchically organized morphologies. The best way to understand this process is to study the specific molecular interaction between their functional groups and inorganic building units. Recently, a novel approach designated as a particle-mediated, nano-scale, aggregation route was found much more spread in the nature than it has been previously assumed ; the new examples of its significance in the carbonate crystalline particles formation are still emerging. As an example of the aggregation process, the role of the biomimetic precipitation of calcium carbonate solids in a laboratory and formation of bio- inorganic structures in corals is presented. These processes, based on the same principle, were found to be similar, but in natural system are much more sophisticated. With increasing of our knowledge on how biomineralization mechanisms work, we can build new strategies for the synthesis of precipitates that can serve us in many different fields.
