Villains and Tricksters in "A Series of Unfortunate Events"

This thesis discusses various aspects of character, as a theoretical concept, and applies the theoretical insights to an analysis of a literary example. The thirteen children’s novels, which comprise A Series of Unfortunate Events (1999-2006), written by Lemony Snicket, are analyzed with respect to types of characters. The characters are examined with respect to their complexity and course of development within the story. The role of gender stereotypes is also taken into consideration. The thesis divides all the characters from Unfortunate Events into three groups: villains, tricksters and others. These characters are described as villains: Count Olaf, Esmé Squalor, Carmelita Spats, and the members of the theater troupe. On the other hand, Violet Baudelaire, Klaus Baudelaire, Sunny Baudelaire, Duncan Quagmire, Isadora Quagmire, and Quigley Quagmire are described as tricksters. It has been concluded that the main difference between villains and tricksters is the difference in the motivation leading to their respective actions.
