The Use of Visual Presentation in Young Adult Fiction
The thesis deals with different uses of visual presentation in young adult fiction. Young adult narratives are divided into three categories - picture books, comics (and graphic novels), and novels - and their different styles of visual presentation are analyzed. In particular, a comparison is performed of the novel Artemis Fowl (2001) by Eoin Colfer and its graphic version Artemis Fowl: The Graphic Novel (2007) by Eoin Colfer, Andrew Donkin, Giovanni Rigano and Paolo Lamanna. It is concluded that although the two versions of the story use different approaches to visual presentation, both narratives contribute additional semantic levels to the written text by visual aspects of their discourses. Thus visual presentation functions as a further mental stimulus for young adult readers.
