Analysis of ancient specimens using nondestructive spectroscopic techniques
We will present and discuss the results of measurements and elemental composition in specimens of art and cultural heritage. First object of the present study is a group of several ancient metal coins. The composition of their patinas will be determined. Furthermore, the work of art of great value will be used like the sample in our investigation. Many nondestructive methods are available for the analysis of those specimens. In the case of chosen samples we use micro-Raman spectroscopy with a visible laser beam and X-ray emission spectroscopy induced by radioactive source. These two techniques, which can provide information on both the atomic and molecular composition of materials, are convenient methods for the analysis of samples like the ones in our present investigation. The identification of pigments, lakes and dyes will be accomplished by means of micro-Raman spectroscopy, while a more detailed characterization of materials is possible thanks to elemental analyses obtained by X-ray emission spectroscopy.
