Where the railway is?

Within the interdisciplinary project of the student workshop “ Where The Railway Is? ” we have tried to devise sustainable, environment friendly and cost effective solutions for the reconstruction of an abandoned railway line in Eastern Croatia. Unusual and mysterious name of the project has inspired our imagination and willingness to participate in this project with fresh and original ideas. We detected the negative aspects of the north – south polarization in the region and therefore we looked for existing east – west infrastructural lines. A railroad built at the beginning of the 20th century and dismantled in 1968. spread from east to the west and consisted of eight railroad stations. We decided to reconstruct disappeared railway and new transportation facilities limit to sustainable forms of transportation (bike, horse, ski-running, walking, skating). Recycling the railroad line was done by designing new contents for the dots/ stations that still stand, visible and recognizable in space. All stations were built following one rigid typology, dictated by the railroad authorities and visible in nearly identical architectural elements – proportions, materials and details. Our group of twenty student volunteers was divided into smaller groups of three students assigned to each of the seven stations. In the first phase of the project each group had to conduct research of the assigned station (it included architectural measurements, photography, taking notes of the building’s condition, SWOT analysis, technical description of the building). The integrity of the project has been sustained through team work on planning the contents of all seven stations. During the completion of individual designs we used CAD compatible software packages. Our engagement in this project started as an idea and developed into seven specific architectural and structural designs that are soundly founded in financial limitations. It offers realistic solutions to spatial problems of the underdeveloped Eastern Croatian Baranja region and answers to the question in the title – where is this railway? In our designs!
